Legacy of an Adopted Child

"Once there were two women, who barely knew each other. One is in your heart forever, the other you'll call mother. Two different lives, shaped to make yours one. One became your guiding star, the other became your sun. The first gave you life, and the second taught you how to live it. The first gave you a need for love, and the second was there to give it. One gave you nationality, the other gave you a name. One gave you the seed of talent, the other gave you an aim. One gave you emotions, the other calmed your fears. One saw your first sweet smile, the other dried your tears. One gave you a family, it was what God intended for her to do. The other prayed for a child, and God led her straight to you. And now you ask me, through your tears, the age old question through the years. Heredity or environment....which are you a product of? Neither my darling...neither, just two different kinds of love". - Unknown

Paperwork SENT

I know I haven't written since we have been back home, but we have been pretty busy! It was hard going back to work after being off for 1 week, but we were definitely glad to back into a routine for now. The day we returned home, we were already receiving calls from Gladney, our homestudy agency and our dossier preparation agency on what we needed to be doing next for our court dossier. Lots of updating paperwork - medical exams, employer letters, fingerprints and police clearance letters and about 1 pound worth of documents to be notarized. But, we finally finished it all (just waiting for our police letters to come back) and put it in the FedEx yesterday! Luckily all of the people we have had to get signatures, information and notaries from have been really understanding. YAY :) Now, they (Gladney) will look it over and make sure everything is done correctly (they are EXTREMELY specific in their guidelines) and if it's ok, it will be sent off for translation and then to the court. In the meantime, we have been preparing for Alex to come home. We made our first big purchase - the convertible crib. We are not sure if he is ready for a toddler bed, since he has been in a crib his whole life, so decided the convertible bed that he can use forever would be a good investment! We ordered it online, it came on Monday, Dennis put it together Wednesday only to discover that a couple of the pieces didn't fit together. So, we took it apart and are sending it back. We have also enjoyed shopping a little bit - getting some clothes and shoes and toys to take with us when we pick him up. Any suggestions for what to entertain a 2 year old with on a 10 hour plane ride?!?! That should be fun! We have started registering - I think Dennis has picked out a lot of toys that HE will enjoy playing with and have compromised on what his room will be - Dennis wanted sports and I wanted baby animals. So we found a set called "TEAM SAFARI" at Babies'r'Us that is a great mix of the two! Once we get the room set up I will definitely post a picture for all to see :) It's going to be ADORABLE - all it's missing is Alex! Stay tuned to our blog for updated information....love to you all and please keep the prayers and support coming!

Hearing about Dennis shopping made me think about our 1st son's baby announcement. It said "Mom can't wait to share the joys and Dad can't wait to share the toys...."

Babies R Us has a great little snack cup with a top on it that holds cheerios, etc. The top is designed to allow the baby's hand to go in to pull out snacks, but it keeps the snack from falling out all over the floor (this was especially great on the plane.)

I'm so glad you asked about things to keep a 2 year old occupied...we're in the same boat (or plane!). We do hope to have our portable DVD player but to a little girl who has never seen TV (we assume), we're not sure it will work.

Yes - post a pic of the room! It's so fun getting it all together. I did it in a matter of 1 week (painting and all) as our dossier had to have completed nursery pics.

Congrats on getting the p/w done so fast...we'll keep checking in to see how fast you can get back!

Blessings,
Laura

HI,

I came across your blog and am excited for you! We brought our 2 home in August from Novosibirsk and they were 2 and 3 at the time. They did NOT want a portable dvd player, even with Russian cartoons, it was too loud for them with the headphones, even turned down low. They played with coloring books (the color wonder ones that dont mar anything), a couple books we read over and over again, some race cars, various snack foods, a doll for each and honestly, walking the plane and going to the bathroom every 10 minutes. Here is my advice- bring a little toddler back pack with you and make it theirs- they can put their new lovie, a couple small toys, a blankie in it and carry it. Our 2 LOVED this- they had something that was just theirs - it was a very very novel concept. Also, take a sippy bottle (we like the Nalgene brand because they are super sturdy and the sucker is pretty hard) so they can suck juice- it helps with ears on landing and some lollipops. My kids will do just about anything for a lollipop. And if the rule is they have to sit still to eat them and not use zoobee (teeth) then you get at least 20 minutes of sitting... Have a great trip!
